Working Days Calculator — Count Business Days Between Dates

Our free working days calculator instantly counts the number of business days between any two dates, adds or subtracts working days from a start date, and shows the complete US federal holiday calendar for 2025 and 2026. Whether you need to calculate a contract deadline, estimate a project timeline, track a shipping window, or know how many business days remain before a due date — this business days calculator handles it with one click, no spreadsheet required.

All 11 US federal holidays are built in and automatically excluded from the count. You can also add your own custom holidays, switch between standard Mon–Fri, 6-day, or Middle East (Fri–Sat) workweeks, and see work hours calculated alongside your business day totals.

How the Working Days Calculator Works

The working days calculator uses a day-by-day iteration method — the same approach used by Excel’s NETWORKDAYS function and banking settlement systems. For every date in the selected range, the tool checks three things: is it a weekend? is it a federal holiday? is it a custom excluded date? Only days that pass all three checks are counted as working days.

    Business Days Formula:

Working Days = Calendar Days − Weekend Days − Federal Holidays − Custom Holidays

For example: to calculate business days between June 1 and June 30, 2026, the tool counts 30 calendar days, subtracts 8 weekend days and 1 federal holiday (Juneteenth, observed Friday June 19), arriving at 21 working days. The same logic applies when you add working days forward from a date — the calculator counts day by day, skipping weekends and holidays until it hits your target.

    What Is a Business Day?

A business day is any weekday — Monday through Friday — that is not a federal or public holiday. Under US federal law (5 U.S.C. § 6103), the government recognizes 11 official federal holidays each year. When a fixed-date holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is observed. When it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed. Banks, USPS, federal courts, and most private employers follow this schedule.

    • Standard business day: Monday–Friday, excluding all 11 federal holidays
    • Banking day: Days the Federal Reserve operates — identical to business days in most cases, used for ACH and wire transfer settlement (T+2, T+3)
    • Court day: Weekdays when courts are open — may differ slightly from federal holidays in some jurisdictions
    • Shipping business day: UPS and FedEx standard ground uses Mon–Fri only; Saturday delivery is a premium add-on and not counted in standard windows

    Is Saturday a Business Day?

In the standard Mon–Fri definition, Saturday is not a business day. However, some industries treat Saturday as a working day — retail, healthcare, and some logistics providers, for example. The calculator’s Weekend Setting dropdown lets you choose: Sat & Sun (standard), Sunday only (6-day workweek), Fri & Sat (Middle East schedule), or no weekends at all.

Do Weekends Count as Business Days?

No — weekends are excluded by default. If a deadline is specified in “business days,” weekends do not count toward that total. A 5-business-day window starting Monday ends the following Friday. A 10-business-day window starting Monday ends two weeks later on Friday, assuming no federal holidays fall within that period.

How Many Business Days in 2025 and 2026?

In 2025, there are 250 working days (365 calendar days, minus 104 weekend days, minus 11 federal holidays that all fall on weekdays). In 2026, there are 251 working days — Independence Day falls on a Saturday and is observed on Friday July 3, effectively reducing the weekday holiday count to 10. The full month-by-month breakdown is available in Tab 3 of the calculator above.

YearCalendar DaysWeekend DaysFederal Holidays (weekday)Working Days

    202536510411250
    202636510410251
    202736510510250

On average there are approximately 21–22 business days per month in the US, or roughly 250 working days per year. February typically has the fewest (18–20); months with no federal holidays and four clean weekends can reach 23.

Common Business Day Windows — Quick Reference

The “Add / Subtract Days” tab handles all of these automatically. Here are the most commonly searched business day windows as a quick reference:

Calculate Business Days in Excel — NETWORKDAYS Formula

If you prefer to work in Excel or Google Sheets, the built-in NETWORKDAYS function is the most reliable method to calculate business days. It automatically excludes weekends and any holidays you list in a separate range.

To count working days between two dates:

    =NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date, [holidays])

Example — working days between A1 and B1, excluding US federal holidays listed in D1:D11:

    =NETWORKDAYS(A1, B1, D1:D11)

To add a number of business days to a start date, use WORKDAY:

    =WORKDAY(start_date, days, [holidays])
Note: NETWORKDAYS includes both the start and end date in its count by default. Our calculator excludes the end date (matching most legal and contract conventions) with an option to include it via the “Include End Date” toggle.

Both NETWORKDAYS and WORKDAY work identically in Google Sheets. For SQL Server, DATEDIFF counts calendar days only — weekends and holidays must be excluded with a custom function or calendar table. For Tableau, a calculated field using WORKDAY logic is the standard approach.

Business Days in Shipping and Contracts

    USPS Business Days

USPS delivers mail Monday through Saturday. However, USPS does not deliver on Sundays or on federal holidays. When USPS quotes a delivery window in “business days,” it typically means Monday–Saturday excluding federal holidays — slightly different from the standard Mon–Fri definition used in most contracts.

    UPS and FedEx Business Days

UPS and FedEx standard ground shipping uses Monday–Friday as business days. Both carriers observe all 11 federal holidays. Saturday delivery is available as a premium service on some lanes but is not counted in standard ground windows. Use Tab 2 of the calculator to find your exact delivery date by adding the quoted number of business days to your ship date.

    Contract and Legal Deadlines

Most US contracts, court filing windows, and regulatory deadlines use the federal Mon–Fri business day definition. The calculator defaults to this standard and excludes all 11 US federal holidays. If your jurisdiction uses a different definition — such as one that includes Saturday — use the Weekend Setting dropdown to switch to “Sunday Only.”

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate business days between two dates?

Enter your start and end dates in Tab 1 of the calculator above. Select your weekend setting, toggle US federal holidays on or off, and click Calculate Working Days. The result shows total working days, work hours, calendar days, weekends excluded, and a month-by-month breakdown for longer ranges.

What is the difference between working days and calendar days?

Calendar days count every single day of the week including weekends and holidays. Working days count only Monday through Friday, minus public holidays. A 30-calendar-day window typically contains around 20–22 working days depending on how many weekends and holidays fall within it.

How many business days are in a month?

On average, approximately 21–22 business days per month in the US. The exact count depends on how many weekends fall in that month and whether any federal holidays occur. February has the fewest working days (18–20); months with no holidays and four full weekends can reach 23.

Does this business days calculator include US federal holidays?

Yes — all 11 US federal holidays are built in for 2025, 2026, and 2027, including the correct observed dates when a holiday falls on a weekend. You can also add your own custom holidays in Tab 1 for company-specific non-working days such as office closures or regional observances.

How do I add 30 business days to a date?

Open Tab 2 “Add / Subtract Days.” Enter your start date, type 30 in the Number of Working Days field, select Add (forward), and click Find the Date. The result shows the exact end date, how many calendar days were spanned, and which federal holidays were skipped along the way.

How do I calculate business days in Excel?

Use the NETWORKDAYS function: =NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date, holidays) to count working days between two dates. To add business days to a date, use WORKDAY: =WORKDAY(start_date, days, holidays). Both functions work identically in Google Sheets.

Is this working days calculator free?
